Guide to Wedding Invitations & Stationery

If you want to give your nearest and dearest plenty of time to book your wedding date in their diary, then send out your wedding invitations in plenty of time.

Here’s some tips and advice on preparing your wedding stationary…

How many pieces will you need?

Your wedding invitation is made up of several pieces and can include…

  • Wedding invitation
  • Separate reception card (if the venue is different to the ceremony)
  • Response card with stamped envelope for the RSVP
  • Gift registry details
  • Outer envelope

Depending on your ceremony and reception locations, you might want to include a map with directions to help your guests find their way around. This is important for interstate or international visitors who are not familiar with the area. Nominate an emergency contact person and put their mobile number with the directions, just in case your guests get lost.

To save on paper, you can do away with the response card and stamped envelope and ask people to RSVP via phone, SMS or email. You may also prefer to send the wedding gift registry details once your guests have told you they are coming.

The Wedding Invitation

Go for the traditional heavy stock paper with printed or engraved text or opt for bright, vibrant colours and designs… the choice is yours. Visit your local newsagent or art supply store to get ideas on stationary colours and designs, or find a specialist wedding stationary shop for a broader range. If you’re budget is limited and you’ve got a large guest list, simply choose the wedding invitation and envelope to match.

Reply Cards (RSVP)

The reply card usually comes with a stamped, self-addressed envelope to make it easy for your guests to RSVP. Provide a space for the number of guests they are confirming for and each of their names, and any special dietary requirements. Are you going all out with a weekend wedding at a resort or property? List the activities and functions organised and ask them to nominate which one’s they’ll be attending.

Wedding Reception Cards

Moving locations after the formal wedding ceremony? A separate card with reception details, including a map or written directions will help your guests find their way around. Make sure you include the exact name of the reception venue, the address and phone number and time the reception will start.

Ordering Your Wedding Stationery

Once you’ve decide on the pieces that will make up your wedding invitations, place your order, preferably four months before the wedding day. Order all your wedding stationary at the same time and preferably from the same supplier. Count one invitation per family, couple or single. Allow extra invitations for last minute additions to your guest list and extra envelopes for addressing mistakes.

Mailing

First, get a price. Head to your local Post Office with a complete wedding invitation and get it weighed. Also find out how much it will be for overseas delivery.

Prepare all your wedding invitations and post them all on the same day. Ideally, guests should receive their invite at least 6 weeks before the wedding date, with plenty of time to RSVP.

For interstate or international guests, contact them four to six months prior to claim that date in their diary. They will need more time to plan ahead and book flights and accommodation.
